Gizem Akgönül was born in Istanbul in 1985. After receiving an education in Industrial Design in Toronto, she moved back to Istanbul and began studying Philosophy and developing her design practice. For the last four years she has been traveling to different regions in order to learn a palette of traditional techniques from various artisans. Her interest is in the history of these regions in order to gain an understanding of the cycles of humanity and how this connects with natural elements and human craft.
She continues her practice with different disciplines and materials for her art and design works in Istanbul and Nicea. Her current work is an exploration of the concept of utopia by constructing an imaginary civilization that produces contemporary design works using traditional craft techniques. Each piece has a function signifying their value as everyday objects of use.
