Krista Mezzadri

Overview
Krista Mezzadri is a Buffalo-based visual artist who creates handprinted monotypes on translucent, delicate Japanese washi paper overlaid onto wood panels using rice paste as adhesive. In Krista's words, "I engage with the coexistence of opposites, therefore my work includes many opposing physical elements together, like tissue and wood, light and darkness, geometry and irregularity. Taken a step further, I’m interested in the meeting point of these opposites, their dynamic dependence which only alludes to beauty."

Each work uses the repetition of small geometric elements to create a dynamic whole. Her compositions resonate with the unique character embodied in each element, but one element never stands out from the next. Instead each is distinctly relating to the others, creating a harmonious movement. Her process is one that is characterized by experimentation and the interaction between the materials she uses. The rigid geometry of a triangle is subtly diffused and disrupted through the process of inking and layering the washi paper - new depictions of this simple shape are revealed through an organic making process performed by hand.
