Minyeol Cho

Overview
On his daily commute through Changsin-dong in South Korea, Minyeol Cho passes the sewing workshops in the garment district where seamstresses craft meticulously sewn garments. Each workshop has mountains of discarded fabric piled out front; a by-product of one of the region’s livelihoods. To him, each scrap of leftover fabric from this trade is imbued with its own unique story.

The works in MInyeol’s "Expanded Fragments" series are created by cutting and stacking small scraps of denim that would have been discarded, expanding their use as a previously limited material. Through the process of treating these materials, the fabric undergoes a natural bleaching process that changes the concentration of their color over time. His method of slowly stacking and lining up the small pieces of fabric reveals the temporal nature of craft from start to finish, preserved at its final stage in a natural resin finish.

The overall process of his work aims to discover hidden stories in our daily lives and highlight the most extraordinary beauty within the mundane.
