Morten Stenbaek

Overview

Morten Stenbaek's furniture reveals a strong devotion to minimalist beauty while staying true to the foundational principles of ergonomics and functionality. Each piece is painstakingly crafted to facilitate concentration and contemplation. Creating all of his furniture by hand, Morten's methods takes precision and the will to obtain perfection. The pieces often appear as though they were carved out of a single piece of wood. Although the mortise and tenon joinery is visible, it is sculpted and rounded to be completely integrated with the rest of the piece.

His work is firmly rooted in the Danish tradition of balancing the tension between comfortable and minimal. Hans Wegner and Finn Juhl are obvious influences, however so is the work of American designer Sam Maloof, whose sculptural forms seem to have inspired Stenbaek the most profoundly. Stenbaek, like Maloof, is a self-taught woodworker and he embraces a subtle movement in his furniture rather than simple linearity.
