These large basins are made of “green” wood, or freshly cut wood, which means they take up to three years to complete through the processes of turning, drying, treating, and other finishing techniques. Hadlock harvests from logs felled by storms and arborists.
His black pieces are made using a dye process using an iron solution which reacts with the tannins of the wood. 10-15 applications of the solution are required to achieve the deep, rich black color you see.
The spalted maple pieces are remarkable for the calligraphic black lines which are the result of injury or disease in the tree.
