These new painted objects are hand-carved from solid hard maple, black cherry, white oak, and sapele, then finished with layers of milk paint and detailed ink drawings. Some are simple, covered in solid color, while others are adorned with intricate figurative and floral motifs. Takashina takes inspiration from ancient painted vessels, most famously the Grecian urns, where the Greeks refined the art of turning useful objects into carriers of myth and story, as well as more humble traditions like folk clocks and hand-painted boxes. Painted decoration on everyday objects is nearly universal, appearing from Neolithic China and Jōmon Japan to Mesoamerica and Europe. Takashina's pieces are loosely reminiscent of these lineages, existing somewhere between artifact and ornament, both elevated and everyday.
