Takashina makes things that don’t always fit neatly into categories. The 'Mon' mirror sits somewhere between a functional object and something emotional and symbolic. The mirror is made exclusively with domestic hardwood, a deliberate choice by the artist to avoid imported lumber where sourcing is opaque or unsustainable. It is constructed using the stack lamination technique, where boards of wood are stacked and glued together, before carving and sculpting into the desired form.
The mirror is painted with motifs of Mugwort, Queen Anne's Lace, Clover and Echinacea, an homage to the native plants growing near Takashina's studio.
