Lise Herud Braten
Informed by the rugged landscapes of Norway, Lise Herud Braten’s work conveys a deep appreciation and keen eye for the finer details of the natural world. Using a combination of hand building, wheel throwing, and Japanese ceramic techniques, Lise constructs simple forms that become the palette for complex, planet-like landscapes. Each piece invites the viewer to draw closer and meditate on the subtle play of colors and textures on the surface.
She works with a range of stoneware and porcelain clays, layering slips, oxides, and natural ash with her own glazes to create the complex surfaces of her works. Her textural moon jar vessels are fired several times, with new layers of slips and oxides added before each firing. The result is works that appear to have been exposed to and weathered by the natural elements over time. With a keen interest in natural forms and textures, she is always exploring new methods and techniques to add to her process.
