Studio Tashtego is pleased to invite you to Resonance, a solo exhibition of new works by ceramic artist Insung Yoon. The opening reception will be on Saturday September 26th from 4-6pm.
This body of work begins with the traditional Korean moon jar, shaped through resonance with the view outside the artist's window in Brooklyn. It is grounded in the Korean architectural philosophy of chagyeong, which values borrowing scenery rather than possessing or reconstructing it—a quiet way of accepting what already exists.
The work unfolds through a relationship between symmetry and asymmetry. Wheel-thrown moon jars, formed by joining two hemispheres, approach a near-perfect sphere while retaining subtle kiln-made irregularities that give each piece its own presence. In contrast, forms informed by jogakbo introduce asymmetry through measured fragmentation and geometric repetition.
These conditions—balance and disruption, chance and control, imperfection and precision—coexist within a single body of work. The surfaces draw from Brooklyn’s industrial landscape: peeling paint, exposed hues, weathered brick, and aged metal, carrying traces of time and use. Rather than reproducing tradition, the work moves through its underlying principles. As chagyeong borrows without claiming, the moon jar becomes a vessel that quietly receives its surroundings. Within these forms, symmetry and asymmetry, Korea and Brooklyn, past and present, come into a gentle resonance.
